Montsalvat is an artists' colony at Eltham on the northeast edge of Melbourne, where a group of artists have built an amazing collection of self-made buildings over the past 80 years.
The mudbrick homes and halls there inspired Eltham bank teller Alistair Knox to become an owner builder after WWII.
Read about Montsalvat here: www.montsalvat.com.au
and here: www.montsalvat.com.au/about.htm
and see a couple of photos I took there here: www.byohouse.com.au/montsalvat
Montsalvat is still an artists' colony, still inhabited by some of its founders, and still open to the public. Worth a visit if you get a chance. It has been used as a backdrop for French Yoplait advertisements on TV, and everything from weddings to poetry readings and book launches.
